"This engine was submerged breifly, ever since it starts and idles fine, but once I start to give it gas it dies...someone told me it sounded like a bent reed? any advice? where do I start trouble shooting?"

"Mike, was a proper recovery proceedure follow when it was fished out of the water? If not it could have numerous internal problems (bent rod, bad rings etc).

If the reeds were damaged it would more likely idle like crap and blow gas back out the throat of the carb..."

"Graham, Thanks for the reply, yes it was drained and flushed, and the compression is good, therefore rings or scoring of the cylinders do not appear to be the issue, and the ease of starting and smooth idle lead me to believe the rod(s) are not bent?"

"Mike, I would take JB's advice - you could inspect the reeds by removing the carb (which needs to come off to clean it), since the reed cage is directly behind the carb, but on this design, the reeds rarely have an issue..."
