if you have one of these, does it CLUNK into gear or make a smooth non-clunking engagement ? also if you don't quickly move the shift handle you can hear the gears meshing... so fast, it clunks. then slow, the gears make meshing sound.

Your shifts have to be smooth and quick. If you make your shifts slow the gears will grind and wear much faster. Smooth and quick will result in a clunk which is actually better for the gears. It is not abnormal for a lower unit to clunk. Is this your first boat? It does not sound like a cable problem more an operator issue.

it's my first pontoon boat, yes. I've owned a 1970's jet boat for year's. I found out with a different hub the clunk can be quieter.
