Is it just the first couple of threads at the mouth, or are they flat further in? That changes the answer.
I've cleaned up a cross threaded gland nut with a thread chaser and had it hold fine afterwards. Chaser, not a cutting tap. Those threads are fine pitch in soft aluminum. A tap cuts them oversize and then the nut won't sit square on the seal face. Grease the chaser so the chips stick to it, then flush the housing out good. Any aluminum swarf that gets inside will find the bearings.
Have a hard look at the nut itself first. Sometimes the nut takes all the damage and a new one screws in clean.
If more than a turn or two is gone I'd be hunting a good used housing. Inserts in that thin wall around a seal bore are a gamble... most shops won't stand behind it.
Does it hold torque now? Is it weeping lube? A pressure test after it's together tells you the truth. thanks
