200hp Johnson

I have a 1987 200hp Johnson it runs great, today I ran it with the muff's on after I replaced a gas line, after I shut it down I left the muff's on,, and hour later I took it off and notice oil in the muff's,, where could it have come from? Feels and smells looks like gear oil it started to ran so I'll take the plug out and see if the oil is down or looks milky tomorrow.

If it's gear oil, the motor could have a lower unit oil leak from around the seals for the drive shaft or the shift shaft. Have you checked the gear oil yet?

What do you think it could be?

If it was black, I suspect it was simply excess unburnt fuel dripping down the soot covered exhaust housing.

If it is indeed the same colorand viscosity of the gearlube, then a seal is leaking somewhere.

(Checking Gearcase For Leaks)
(J.Reeves)

Remove the large slotted drain/fill screw from the bottom of the gearcase and also the identical looking screw that will be located up near the cavitation plate in order to drain the gearlube.

After all of the lubricant has drained, install one of the slotted screws, whichever your preference might be.

Apply 7 to 12 pounds of air pressure to the open screw hole. Use a piece of rubber fuel line or something to create a tight air hose fit if you do not have a proper fitting.
If a leak exists, that pressure should allow you to locate the leak by sound and/or sight.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

well I took out the plugs and water came out, about half water and oil, I well be taking it in the shop and having all the seals replaced and new water impeller done also just to be safe, there was a lot of weed raped around and behind the prop, and some braided line also, I'm headed to Fl. for the winter so get it fixed now and fish all winter.

Thanks Joe I'll check it out...... Hey I looked it up and there is nothing there.

Oops, sorry about that (the eBay thing)... I've been busy working on a fence repair job and let it run out. THe items for sale run for seven days and need to be replenished. I'll put some things in there now.

Good luck with the lower unit seal work.
