2009 9.8 prop advice

I have a 12 foot jon boat with a 2009 nissan 9.8; I boat in two very different situations, one is trolling for trout in a small lake (Hagg) and the other hunting ducks on a powerful river (Willamette).

I have a stock 3 blade prop now that works great in the lake but eh, OK going upstream in the river.

Would anyone care to offer me some advice on an aftermarket prop I can buy for the river application? I am trying to get more top-end in the river.

Also if I may, is there a fuel filter in the 3.1 gal stock fuel tank?

Thanks in advance!

Re: 9.8 prop advice

We usually recommend a water-separating filter to be used with the 9.8. There is a fuel filter inside the motor cowling. May or may not be a screen on the pickup tube of the tank. Unscrew the fuel cap and look inside. If you just see the pickup tube, there isn't any tank pickup screen. I prefer not to have one, as they can be more problem than they are worth.

There is a prop chart at http://www.tohatsu.com/accessories/prop.html

In general, more pitch gives better top speed at a cost in hole shot. Less pitch gives a good launch, but may allow the motor to exceed maximum WOT RPM (not what you ever want to do). Best method to dial in the proper pitch for a given application is with a tachometer. Trying to do it without one is driving blind.

Re: 9.8 prop advice

Just remember that there are limits to what the motor can do -- even the 9.8, flexible as it is, can't perform like a 115. If your prop allows the motor to hit just under 6,000 RPM at WOT, you are about as dialed-in as you can get (for top end).
