2009 8.1 Gi-Jf cooling problem, need help

First post on this website!

I have winterized this engine for over 10 years, no problems. This year, using the muffs, I couldn't get water to flow through the system- no water exiting behind the outdrive or out the ports above the props. I installed a new impeller. After the muff system failed again I tried immersing the entire outdrive, above the intakes. in a tub. Still could not get water to exit out of the exhaust ports.

Any suggestions?

Before installing the new impeller after it was dry I noticed a lot of black deposits inside the housing. Most of it was loose so I just scraped it off. It didn't appear to be rubber but it probably was, from black rubber blades of the impeller.

The new impeller probably didn't run long enough after that to cause a problem so I have not inspected it since. I forgot to include that when I connected the muffs PLUS ran in the tub at the same time, the system did work (with water exiting from behind the outdrive plus out the port above the props). But it only worked properly for a few minutes before the water stopped exiting from the system.

I live in a fairly cold climate and the temp will be going below freezing for the next few nights so I'd really like to drain the water out while trying to resolve this problem.

Drain it and no worries with freezing

I would say it's most likely the new impeller.
Been doing it for years and no problems, change impeller and it worked for a few minutes then stopped

Draining it has been the problem. It has the hose with the blue cap, but it's an earlier model without the quick drain feature. I am not sure which of the 2 hoses coming out of the impeller pump need to be disconnected. Or both?

In the past I've always used the muffs and then entered the AF through that same hose. When the AF came out the outdrive I shut it down.

Using AF in a motor before it is entirely drained is a crap shoot.
If all the water is drained then no AF is needed, as Bondo always says "air doesn't freeze"

Pull all plugs and hoses. Put a wire or long screw up plugs to make sure all water is out and your good

Great quote!

I have used AF for winterizing for almost 50 years, 38 in VT, I think I'll stick with that for now! :)

For this year I will pull the hoses and plugs and use the air gun to get the rest of the water out. Unfortunately I'll still have to deal with the lack of the heated raw water being dumped out the back.

Thanks

The risers and manifolds were replaced in '23. The engine ran fine after the first impeller was replaced and we have not run aground since. I don't believe they could be blocked, but maybe. I plan to reverse flush the cooling hoses when it gets warmer, it's 19 degrees F right now.
