2008 optimax shift cable play

Have a 2008 150hp optimax on a project boat I'm working on. Had lower unit off for new water pump. Got it back together hook shift and throttle cables per book. Started on hose , everything great. To dock no reverse, back to house readjust and back to dock. went in reverse but not like it should ( grinding and clicking). Back to house; Readjusting I notice I could move the shift linkage a 1/2" with the cable hooked up. Put it reverse and back to to neutral , linkage will be off neutral tilll you push forward and back to neutral, New cables so shouldn't be cables. Is a 1/2" play in control box to much?  Old box but I never seen one wear out.

Follow the linkage under the front of the power head..... Move the linkage by hand an see what is broken/worn/missing....

If the shift shaft moves from side to side it will cause this issue.
