2008 50hp tach reading not steady

The tach is jumping several 1000 rpm while running, from 2000 to 4000, won't stay steady. With engine off, needle stays on 800rpm. Is the tach bad or could it be something else? Mechanic replaced the starter switch about 4 weeks ago, did not have a tach issue until switch was replaced and ran about 3 times.

jimco23, try cleaning all the connections to the tach. I had a problem like that a few years ago and that solved it.
