2007 mec 90hp 4-stroke EFI air filter

I am a new poster on this forum and recently purchased a boat with a 2007 90 4-stroke on it. In checking the air filter it appears something is causing the foam filter element to deteriorate, it is very sticky almost, as if it were melting. Is this normal or if not any ideas what the cause might be? Motor has 168 salt water hrs on it. Thanks.

No normal, it's the salt air...just replace

Thanks Steve. I was thinking it might be one of those filters where oil is applied to it, but there is not much dust on the water. I also spoke to a local tech; he said it is not so much a filter, as a sound deadener for the air intake.
