"I think I need to adjust my throttle control. I recently had my skiff in for warranty work on the wiring and the dealership may have removed my throttle cables to perform the necessary repair work. I’m thinking they may have put them back and didn’t adjust them properly BUT, I don’t know that for sure. I did check the original problem and it was repaired and working properly but before I took it out for a test ride, (a mistake I won’t make again) I completed a project to move my consol forward, without disconnecting the cables and I’m sure I put some strain of the cables. Anyway, I was achieving a max of 6000 RPM's before the move and now I max out at 5200, with the front mounted shift lever all the way to the console. I’m certain that the weight shift/displacement by moving the console forward is not the problem as I have had considerable amounts of weight all over this boat without a loss of RPM. Can someone explain the procedure to check and (if necessary) adjust the cables? I have the expensive (OEM) service and repair manual but it mentions nothing about the shift/throttle control unit.

Thanks,
Dave"

"I'm not really sure. I took my 6 month old skiff in for a problem with the ignition, which turned out to be a faulty main wire harness. Suzuki sent a new harness and I was left with a bill of 1.5 hours labor (130 bucks) "troubleshooting" fee, which Suzuki doesn't cover according to the dealership. This, after I all but pointed the service manager and dealership owner to the wire harness as the suspected cause, by explaining all that I had previously done to diagnose the problem. I went to this dealership only once and I can't seem to get a strait answer out of them, mostly because I'm not "allowed" to speak with a knowledgeable mechanic, only the service manager, which (in this dealership) is little more than an attractive young lady with some computer savvy and a really cute way of protecting the service department and dealership owner from interruptions.

Anyway, I have no desire to return to the dealership unless I have no other option. I wouldn't have in the first place if I thought the ignition problem was not going to be a "warranty" issue and fully covered.

Whether they caused this (throttle) problem, I can't say but I doubt it - most likely I caused it when I moved the console forward so I'm trying to get some info on working with these controls.

"Well, I didn't have much

"Well, I didn't have much luck finding info on working on the control box and it didn't look like something I wanted to tackle without knowing what I was getting into.

I went to the dealership and asked the owner if he could find out from the service department what they did when they replaced the wire harness - specifically asked if they may have removed the throttle cable to replace the harness. His answer was "no" they wouldn't have done that. I answered that I didn't think so but I'm having a problem (I explained) and asked if he would mind asking anyway. His reply was "I don't have to, they wouldn't of removed the cable to replace the harness", or words to that effect. To his credit, he did say I could bring it in and they would check it - that if they did something wrong they would correct it.

Not wanting to wait for them to "get around" to checking it, and because of my previous experiences with this dealership, I went back home and started looking more deeply into the problem. After a few hours of working with the throttle, shifting gears, checking the throttle body, and generally scratching my head, I removed the cover on the throttle/gear shift cables and low and behold, the throttle cable had been removed and (more importantly) replaced in the wrong position. There is a notch on the cable that is supposed to mate up with a keyway (of sorts) on the cable bracket. The dealership had removed the cable and when replaced, not matched up the notch and keyway. The cable held firm in the bracket and looked OK from external inspection, but because it was not indexed in the keyway, the cable could not move fully rearward, to wide open throttle. I moved it to it's proper place - problem solved.
