"I have a 88 Carver and just installed a new 2007
crusader 300Hp. 350. Fresh water cooled. Right away I had some heating problems. After installing a new Bravo pump, a new T/Stat. and roded my heat exchanger i still was running around 190Deg.On the next trip somehow the engine gulped water, Broke the new offset pattern starter and I was towed. It still ran a little warm but ran great. Then I gulped water again and broke the starter drive this time. Now I installed the new merc. Cagged Flappers and went back out again.Sometimes when I am starting up the engine won't fire untill I let off the key.On this day the engine sounded like it started backwards for a sec. or so and I gulped water again and another new starter. Nothing has changed as far as my height in the water. Fast Jeff please reply as you said these are noted for having a water gulping problem. Thanks."

"James
I suspect that when you say the starter ran backwards it was in fact stuck in the engauged position and still in when the engine was running. You sometimes have to sim the starter out so it dosen't hang up in the ring gear. The ingesting water part is a big problem. What broke on the starter, the bendex? Having this answer might helpfigure out the rest of the problem."

"James:

Suggest you look in

"James:

Suggest you look into raising the risers as much as you can. They sell riser extension pieces in various heights to keep the water out. Go as high as you can get away with, even if you have to move things in the way.

Sorry, but that motor is famous for that--too much overlap between the intake and exhaust valve openings.

Jeff"

"James,
You installed a new 2

"James,
You installed a new 2007 Crusader 350, then said you installed a new Bravo pump a thermostat and rodded out the exchanger. I'm assuming you replaced the longblock only and bolted on your old Mercruiser components. What did you use for exhaust and are the exhaust parts new?"

Thanks for replying Fast Jeff

Thanks for replying Fast Jeff and Rick. I installed a new Power pack Crusader Motor. I bought a new Y-Pipe from Merc and the Exh.manifolds and Risors are ne sierra. I am at the place now after having the heads Mag. checked and pressure tested both good now I think I found a casting flaw in the new exhaust manifold.I'm going to have it tested tomorrow.

By the way this is an I/O Merc

By the way this is an I/O Mercruser. Does the 12 inches still apply from the water linr to the top of the risors?

"Did you put new flappers in

"Did you put new flappers in when you installed that new Y pipe. I know that you put the caged system in, but I would still use the original flapper as well.

Crusader does not recommend the ball type system since they restrict the outbound water flow and allow water to remain in the top of the system which can easily get down into the manifold.

Merc originally hailed these as the cure to the 7.4 ingestion problems, they made little to no difference. Like I said, Crusader feels they are detrimental.

Regarding the temp, have you verified the accuracy of your gage? 12 is the minimum exhaust height but if your original motor lasted 19 years, I don't think the exhaust system design is the problem, although, like I said, it could be those flappers.

Good luck
Rick"

When I said the cagged system

When I said the cagged system it doesn't have balls. It is the 807166A3 Water shutter assy's
from Mercruser which go in the origional position as the old shutters went. I am still trouble shooting. I will let everybody know what I find. Thanks for all your help.
