2007 5.0 Mercruiser EFI fuel filter problem

I have a 2007 5.0 mercrusier engine with an engine fuel filter directly over a white mesh fuel filter/screen. I had a water seperator fuel filter installed above the engine fuel filter. Now,when the engine filters need to be changed, the engine will not start until the system is primed with an inline "bulb". Rumor has it that it may NOT be a good idea to add the water seperator filter as this could hinder the pressurization of the fuel tank and cause the engine fuel pump not to get sufficient fuel to run.

Any comments on this "problem" will be greatly appreciated.

help me understand, what are you talking about when you say the fuel tank pressure? I have a factory certified merc. tech that I take my boat to and he installed an in line transom mounted seperator to my newer 454 with no problems

Huh,..??..??

The original factory water seperating fuel filter is All that's needed.....
And, with the efi motors, even it has to be installed Full, or it won't prime...

Why do you have 3 filters,..??

Re: 5.0 Mercruiser EFI fuel filter problem

It sounds like he has the new Gen 3 cool fuel system and they have two filters inside the fuel pump housing, See numbers 26 and 21.

And it sounds like he has added an old style water separating fuel filter inline to his stock Gen 3 fuel cooler and that is why he ended up with 3 filters.;)

Any time you change the fuel filters you really should add fuel to the filter, It just helps the fuel pumps do there job easier with less ware and tare to the fuel pumps (You have two pumps on yours) and helps eliminate the possibility of air getting into the fuel line system.

As far as your Rumor, you could also call mercruiser customer service to help confirm it or not at 405-743-6566.
