2007 15 hp 4 stroke won't idle

2007 15 hp mercury 4 stroke won't idle SN#1B501908
starts ok
fuel/plugs/fuel filter replaced/using fuel stabilizer
when you decrease the throttle it dies fairly fast
also today while pumping up the fuel line bulb and trying it out after replacing the fuel filter it leaked a fair amount at the base of the carburetor although this stopped after I started it up for a while and I couldn't reproduce the leak when the engine was hot

I guess I need to know if I should rebuilt the carburetor at this point or any other suggestions.

I have been running the fuel out after every time I don't use the boat for several days and just read a post that said it may cause the same problem I am describing, any thoughts?

so your saying it starts up fine, then after useing it for a bit at higher speeds when you slow down it dies?

rebuild ur carbss, the primer bulb on your fuel line was not soft/deflated when it stalled right?

the primer bulb was slightly softer but you couldn't squeeze it much


if I get a carb rebuild kit and I am fairly mechanical, what are the chances of really screwing the carb up?

any way to pull the fuel intake line and shoot in carb cleaner to make a difference in the float/needle valve?

try this get the engine going and rev it up and when you are slowing it back down have someone squeeze the primer bulb and see if it helps your engine!

if that keeps the engine running then you have a bad fuel pump!

but because it runs at higher rpm's then i am sure there is some gunk in your carbs, to clean the carbs it is very siple just make sure you remeber how it all goes back together(not hard) or it might be worth ordering a manual on your engine that will tell you step by step on how to do it.

I tried squeezing the bulb already and it didn't make any difference, it still died when trying to idle

sounds like a carb rebuild is needed

took off the carb
cleaned it with carb cleaner and now the motor idles and runs perfect
found the repair manual online in pdf format for $13
