Went to start on muffs and cranked over after 2 turns and started. Little rough, hunting for idle but have a check engine light and the one directly underneath it on (smartcraft sc1000 gauge). No bells/buzzers. Doesn't seem to run any different, rev'ed up to ~1200-1500 only. Temp stayed in normal, tell tale stream was strong, turned on/off 4-5 times and check engine light comes on after about 5 sec. I'm stumped where to start......ran beautiful when put away last year......

Best place to start is to have the outboard scanned at a dealer. The check engine light usually indicates a fault, or intermittent fault with a sensor or ignition component.

Thanks, was hoping to troubleshoot a little first before the 150 mile tow to the dealer......

The only other suggestion I have is to reset your PCM- this may clear a sticky code. Unfortunately, it also puts your outboard back in break-in mode. But, if it clears the code, a little bit of oil is cheaper than a 150 mile roadtrip.

I'll do that, thanks....just a matter of disconnecting the battery?

Actually You can diagnose this without the scan tool but you would need the factory Mercury Repair manual and a Quality Digital Volt Ohm meter and a lot of time and patience.
