2006 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke 4cyl Idling Issue

Hey guys. New to the forum but have lurked for a while. Please understand I know almost nothing about outboard motors so excuse my lack of knowledge. I have a 2006 Tracker Pro Team 175TXW with a 40 horse Merc 4 stroke 4cyl outboard. Last time I had it out on the water I was pulling up to the ramp and while idling in neutral I noticed the exhaust sounded louder than usual and the RPM's kept climbing. The only thing that would stop the RPM's from climbing was I had to put it in gear. It was harder to shift into gear than usual and when I did it made a "jarring" sound. I haven't had it out since and am wanting some advice on what the first thing to check would be. I know I'll probably have to take it to a dealer just wandered if anyone had a similar issue and might know an easy fix. I can provide more info if needed. Thanks in advance!
 
The "jarring sound" was from shifting at higher rpms - wouldn't make a habit of that, it will reduce gear life.

Being an EFI there is a number of sensors (just like a car). Any of them could be going that would account for the increased/climbing rpms - nothing you can poke at/check in the driveway to see if one of them is the issue - need to get it "plugged in" at a dealer. That would be my "first" troubleshooting suggestion.
 
Thank you for the reply. I have a few Mercury dealers here locally I can check with. The boat has been in storage for two years. I did not add anything to the fuel or do any type or winterization process. I basically parked it in the garage after the issue occured. My other question is: do I need to drain the old gas out of it, add stabilizer or something similiar, before I take it in to the dealer? Thanks in advance.
 
I would take it in "as is", tell them it's been stored and what it's doing/not doing - they will take it from there.

If you change "anything" it could mask the problem or lead them (initially) in the wrong direction.
