2006 Honda BF90 Stalling Issue.

I am posting this for my Father in Law who has been having an issue with his 2006 Honda BF 90 outboard.

Situation: Engine idles fine at pier but after 20-25 minutes of running it in gear, the engine sputters to low RPMs then shuts off. When this happens, the engine will not restart for 5-10 minutes. After restarting, engine runs fine for few minutes then shuts off again. It seems to be shutting off once it heats up.

At first, I thought the engine was getting starved of fuel so I replaced entire fuel system (fuel lines, fuel water separator, pick up tube, primer ball). I made sure all connections were tight. I checked old fuel water separator for water in fuel. I checked fuel in fuel tank for water. No water found. I added new fuel to tank, fuel water separator, and bled carbs to remove any old fuel.

To ensure fuel in fuel tank wasn't causing the issue, I connected a new portable fuel tank with new fuel directly to engine and engine still shut off as described above.

This led me to my current idea of engine overheating since I know its not a fuel related issue. No alarms sound when it shuts off, but we went ahead and replaced the thermostat in the powerhead. The carbs have been recently cleaned.

Researching online today, I believe it could be an issue with the CDI? Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm stumped. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting any warning lights?

If there is an overheat, the red light should come on......if the light is working properly. You should also get a continuous beep.....if that is working.

You can check the light operation by taking the red lead off of the temperature switch....located very near the thermostat.

Use a little jumper wire to connect that lead to a good engine ground, then turn the key to on. The red light should come on.

If you have access to an infrared temp gun (like one sold at Harbor Freight https://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-infrared-thermometer-with-laser-targeting-61894.html ), measure the temperature at the thermostat. It should be a 72 deg C thermostat or approximately 162 deg F.

Then you will know for sure.

If it is indeed overheating, you will probably need to install a new water pump kit.

Could it be the CDI? Yes it could, however, the only real way to disprove it, is to try another CDI.

Back to the fuel. When it slows down, will it keep running if you squeeze the fuel bulb? If so, then it is a fuel related issue.

Has the fuel filter on the motor been changed. It could just be a clogged filter that does not allow a large flow of fuel, but once sitting will allow enough fuel to seep through to get the engine started again to run for a short time.

The process is essentially.....eliminate all the possibilities that you can to help you zero in what is left.

He ordered a new CDI so hopefully that will solve the problem.

Fuel- I do not think it is a fuel issue because squeezing the bulb does not keep the engine running. The fuel filter was recently replaced along with all other components of the fuel system. (lines, water separator, bulb, pick-up tube, and we ran engine on a new portable tank with fresh fuel)
