Hi all,
just spent the last 10 days on Lake Powell. Great time boat started leaking 3rd day when outdrive was raised. No leak when lowered. I am assuming one of the bellows hoses cracked. no big deal, when going online to find parts, I found a complete seal kit with gimbal bearing. My question is *** Do I need to buy the complete seal kit, or can I just replace the bellows hoses? I will do whatever needs to be done, but spending 140.00 for a kit that is not needed is a waste if all I need is a bellows hose. Any horror stories or mechanic stories are always appreciated.
thanks alan:cool:

i do know the bottom shift cable is about 90.oo through mericruiser, and about 3 hrs to put on by dealer, 140.00 seems cheap, good luck

Water can't come up the riser unless your hit by a sunami.

So it's the gimbel one leaking.

Meaning you may need a new gimbel bearing.

140 is cheap if it is a complete kit.

You sure that's where it is leaking into the boat from you see it ?

If you get a leak when the drive is raised is usually caused by the shift cable bellows.

Take a ride to your local Merc dealer and pick up the kit. Along with the new cable.

can any one tell me i have a 1973 mercruiser 140 hp that the gears in the out drive is shot i also have a out drive for a 120 will that work on my 140?

the boat doesn't leak a drop when the outdrive is down. when I raise the outdrive I get at least and probably more than 1/2 gallon per minute into the boat.

Alan17, its over 5 yrs old, replace all your rubber, its obviously getting old. shift shaft bellows will leak that much, usually tilted or turned to port, gimble bellows usually seap all the time. replace your lower cable as mentioned also to save you from doing it in a few months.
