"To table set, I am a newbie. When I run my engine at 3/4 to full throttle for more then 10 minutes, my engine alarm sounds and the motor shuts its self down. There is also smoke coming from the engine as well. What should I start off checking? All help is appreciated."

"Smoke or steam? If it is white then it is a sure sign your engine is getting hot. Could be water pump, t-stats or there is a partial internal cooling blockage."

"Not really, straight forward.

"Not really, straight forward. If your running in saltwater I would definetly change the t-stat, should be located on the head under a cover with 2 or 3 bolts. The pump requires dropping the leg to get to it. Not a hard job if all the bolts come out easy. There is usually 1 bolt under the cav plate zinc going up into the leg. Take your time, remember how it all came apart and put it back as before. Not a hard job and one you should do every 2-3 years, before it wears out. I pull the leg bolts one at a time every spring and lube them so that when I need to drop the leg I don't have any seized bolts. If your engine has a pressure relief valve you should make sure it is clean and working as well. It is located at the base of the engine facing aft, it will be under a cover with a hose running to the upper mid section of the leg. (where water discharges through small holes) It is spring loaded so don't let it fly apart on you when you remove the last bolt."

Thanks for the input. I spoke

Thanks for the input. I spoke with a service manager at a Yamaha dealer and he also suggested that I may be running with my jack plate too high and I am pulling aerated water since I am not running a tunnel. I am going to run it at different heights on the jack plate and watch my water pressure gauge before I take it apart.
