K, we took this boat from our Mechanics where we had oil pan replaced, heat exchange, and several others parts replaced on this due to clogging and rusted hole in pan. took it out in tampa bay for the day, everything was great started right up. went fishing start and stop like 3 or 4 spots. last spot of the day the motor would not start.. batterys are good they are brand new cleaned and tested. new starter replaced when we got home thinking that might be it. but it still won't start. it makes a noise not a clicky noise but like chattering noise when you turn the key to start... called a friend today he knows alittle about motors like this but I want to know what you guys think, he says it sounds like the starter is not engaging maybe need to add shims ? but why would it start all these times and now won't start? any idea's this is my first boat just bought it a month ago.. sea sport 2744 with the Volvo penta 5.7..

All I want to do Is Go Fishing........

Ayuh,.... Pull the starter, 'n inspect it to find why it would engage,.....

Could be as simple as loose starter bolts, or as bad as broken starter bolts,....

yes battery's are charged they are brand new and have been tested and we keep them charged.. its not a clicking sound like a dead battery its more of a chatter noise..

Broken teeth in the flywheel? You can try rotating the engine a little so that the starter would pick up a different spot on the flywheel. Or could be the solenoid.

ok I feel stupid. yes the battery's are new and I thought my hubby checked them.. but we had a friend coming over to help fix this monster today so he put the shore power on charge over night and guess what. new starter installed and battery's charged. it started right up... now I feel dumb..
thanks r all your advise
