2005 Mercury 200 overheated is there damage

"I ran over a plastic bag and

"I ran over a plastic bag and did't relize it until motor started pouring out white smoke and then an alarm started.There was no water from pee hole. I pulled over to closet dock ( 2-3 minutes ) and shut motor off. I waited about 1/2 hour and restarted and idled it home. Could i have damaged anything?? What should I check?? Starts up now without a problem, but haven't ran it hard. Please any info would be appreciated!
