2005 merc 8hp fuel problem

Hello,

I have a a 2005 merc 8hp long shaft that is having a fuel problem. It is hooked to my main tank thru the fuel/water seperater. I have trouble priming it with the fuel bulb and it seems to never stay hard. I bought a new bulb, removed fuel line from the boat and blew it out. The motor runs well if I hook up a seperate fuel tank and run it. The boat it is hooked up to is a 1998 custom weld cobra with a 350 marine power v-8. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Obviously something wrong with the installation of the filter set-up.----------Do you have any valves to isolate the main motor when the 8 HP is running ?

I don't see any valves. It looks like the fuel line is hooked up to a arrow out on the filter housing.

You can only run one line off of the fuel/water separator even though there are two taps. Split the output line and install a 3-way valve...primary in, two lines out or input, off, line 1, line 2.

Fastjeff Law Number One (for outboards): Never, ever put anything BEFORE the fuel pump!

Outboards have very weak fuel pumps that can't suck fuel through any kind of restriction--like a water separator with a fine media filter in it. (I recommend 30 microns or coarser, which I've learned that the hard way!) Assuming your water separtor has a fine filter media--I've seen ones with (gasp!) 10 micron media--the slightest load of bad fuel and you're into vapor lock. That includes your inboard motor as well, by the way.

I'd recommend you go back to OB tank for the kicker. It's inconvenient, but it will work lots better.

Jeff
