"I am close to pulling the trigger and buying a boat with this engine on board. Any one else running one, any comments. Any info would be appreciated. Aren't most engines of this age fuel injected?

Thanks for the help!"

"What's the serial number of your motor?

If you in fact have an Opti, it certainly will not have a carb(s).

Maybe a 1990-something 150 with an Opti hood.

Opti's are direct injected - pressurized fuel/air rails with conventional and direct injectors - no carbs - no way..."

Well....maybe it's not an Optimax.

The model # is 150XL SWB.

Serial # is 1B119020 2005
If it's not an Optimax is it any good??
It definitely is carburated and it appears to
never have a wrench on it.

There are no decals on the hood. The owner says
he didn't like the look. This comment alone had me wondering whats up with this deal!

I appreciate any further help you guys can give me. I hope I'm not messing with a con man here.

Thanks

"Your serial number combined with the fact it has carbs makes it Merc's 2.5L 150 which came from the XR6/Mag III line of motors.

As noted it was carburated and utilized Mercs Thunderbolt 4 ignition which was a mainstay (and super reliable) for well over 35 years.

It is quite a sound design and with the proper care/maintenance, should last you for years to come.

2005 was the last year that Merc produced most of their (conventional) 2 strokes since the big bad EPA made them stop. However, even in the longer term parts should not be an issue as literally thousands of the V6's were produced during their 20+ year run with the majority of parts being interchangable between horsepowers/models."

"Hi there!

Welcome to the forum!

Few things worth looking into...

1. Compression should be sound on ALL cyliders,
2. Check lower case oil for any traces of water, usually indicated by a cloudiness,
3. Replace the impeller,
4. Make sure that all internal wiring is sound and has not been tampered with,
5. Insist on a decent water test, at least an hour or three on the water should give indication of cold & hot engine performance,
6. Make sure the trim is working smoothly,
7. If gut feel tells you to walk away, DON'T ignore it. Many deals are sweet in the short term, burns you long after the taste of a sweet bargain has been forgotten...

My two cents worth...

"O ja,

Almost forgot... You should see at least 5000 RPM at full tilt. Some guys prop the rig incorrectly, so you might not get full potential out of the motor.

Under propped, quick out of the hole, low top.
Over propped, slow on take off, good top end.

But max RPM's is essential.

What's the price of the deal? Comparitive to what's in the market? Many guys just want to drop their toys because they not using them, so there are bargains to be had either way.

Cheers!"
