"A good friend of mine failed to properly winterize his (first) I/O motor. When inspecting and running, briefly, the motor prior to spring use he found one plug completely out of the engine and another leaking!! His fear is now a cracked block. QUESTION: Can the plugs be replaced (knocked in w/a rubber mallot and flat board), launch the boat but not leaving the marina, let motor warm up to check for overheating while checking the oil for "milk"? Checking the oil shows no sign of water. Any suggestions on how to get an idea of any damage before taking it to a shop/mechanic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks."

"You can try to insert new freeze plugs the same way you would do in a car engine. Unfortunately, more often than not, raw water cooled marine engines that have not been properly winterized (like your friend's) and pop a freeze plug due to very low temperatures also develop cracks in the block.

I have posted several times that installing a closed cooling kit (if available for the engine we are talking about) is cheap isurance."
