2005 140hp Merc - difficult to start (2 stroke)

I have had this engine fully serviced in mid December for start of summer (Australia).

Was starting fine upon return from dealer / service.

I started several times in the last 2 weeks -- no problems

Today, it "turns over" but will not fire?

Batteries and leads are both getting hot from turning engine.

The same problem existed before I sent engine for service. But the service manager thought I was silly, coz' the engine started beautifully for him ?

Clean & fresh fuel in tank. Plenty of 2-Stroke oil in the oil reservoir. Prime the fuel line via "bulb" ...... usual procedure.
Have also tried using "push button" on key for choke0

But engine won't start ? !

Any suggestions please

Geoffrey

to be honest.....I would take it back to the dealer while it has the problem, and see if it will still start for him. it could be as simple as your start up procedure, or your gremlin has surfaced and let him see what your problem is.

your decision is it fuel or fire problem..as a preliminary check use an inductive timing light around the plug wires one by one..dont keep grinding on the starter...if it dont start in a few turns the problem is still there..let it cool before you damage the starter or burn out the solenoid..

The motor you have has a primer(no choke).
It feeds extra fuel to the 2 top carbs.
Unhook one of the lines to the carb from the primer and see if it's squirting fuel as someone hits the key to choke.
After it starts pull one line and see if it's still squirting fuel. No need to hit the key.
Do a compression test.
Check for spark.

Does the squeezie get firm when you pump the ball?

Hey, thanks for the several suggstions. Tried again this arvo' with two batteries in parallel, but still no start :-(

& I didn't push my luck by continually cranking!!

One of my mates has suggested changing the spark plugs ..... I know they weren't done at the service in mid-December.
Dealer said they were "ok" ...... but replacing should/will rule out that variable.

(my concern there is that I'll have to check not only make / type of plug - I'll google that easy enough I reckon, but also torque req'd to fasten new ones at.) & I don't have a torque spanner yet.... but may get one if needed

& I'll try & check the fuel flow as suggested. :)

For a fellow who "can read" but is not a mechanic ...... is a "manual" a useful purchase ?

kind regards, GJ

Sparkplugs likely will not cure this.------------If dealer / mechanic can start this motor I suggest you take it there.-------Ask the dealer to explain each step of the procedure to you.-----Learn and understand how the motor works.--------------When dealer says push key in to prime the motor ask him what this does exactly on the motor.

G'day Jerryjerry05 !

"squeezie" bulb does get firm when priming ....... ie, the inline fuel primer that is squeezed to prime an engine prior to starting.

thanks for your comments, GJ

Red-faced "Newbie" --> yep it was my starting procedure! :-(

A mate tried starting engine for me, & away she went !!!! Sweet As !!!! (is that a global phrase ? ..... I'm sure it prob' is!!)

He turned key to 1 o'clock & held for approx 10sec ...... then turned to start ..... & START she did!!

So I eat some humble pie and my mate reinforced his suggestions to me to "get out 'n use the boat", "the more the better"!!

& thanks again to all who replied!!

GJ

When your mate turned the key and waited for 10 seconds he didn't need to do that.
Turn the key and as you turn it to start you push the key in to operate the choke or primer.

The primer is not the squeeze ball.
The primer is the choke that gives the motor an extra shot of fuel to help start.
Pushing in the key activates the primer.
It only works once when the key is pushed in.
Push it in and you can hear the diaphragm in the primer get energized(click).
Holding it in doesn't do anything more.
The old chokes with the butterflies across the carb would work as long as the key was held in.

Your mate was right. DO NOT LET THE BOAT SET!!!!! Get out there and go boating.
