i replaced a 2004 5.7l 350 vor

i replaced a 2004 5.7l 350 vortec had freeze damage installed new longblock and san juan cooling i have a code tool it locks down motor for service mode but cannot zero timming. it stays at aprox 8 deg will not move when turn dist. it does have a pig tail labled shift interupt will groundig or powering lock my dist down. HELPPP!

"That engine does not have adjustable timing. As you found out, turning the distributor does not change the timing, but it does increase or decrease the gap that the spark has to jump between the rotor and the terminal on the distributor cap. You need to make sure that you get the distributor back in the correct position (to minimize the gap) or it will not run right.

"thanks dave. ok first i have no codes second it does not run right. it does not start without giving throttle. not as smooth. can turn dist to get boat to run under load but i burnt a valve so i am back at the timming problem i have good fuel pressure. dist does not turn very far in either direction move one tooth fwd will not start move one tooth back will not run my #1 piston is up rotor pointing to #1 cyl dist cap labeled #1, timing marks lined up. stumped. dont want to burn any more valves or cause engine damge. how do you know when your gap in dist is correct?"
