My neighbor has been having problems with motor quitting on him. First time it quit as he was pulling away from doc. He takes boat to a local repair shop. They claim it was an ethanol problem. They cleaned everything and installed an exterior filter. I go with him to launch his pontoon. We get about a quarter mile and it quits. Unable to crank it again and we have to be towed. I check spark. Spark checked good. Since he had already payed over 900 for repair I did not want to get involved and told him to take it back. He takes it back and leaves it with the guy while going on vacation. Comes back guy claims it isnt ready. A week later he picks up boat . Mechanic stated they took it to a lake and run it full throttle for 20-30 minutes no problems. So once again we lauch pontton only this time I stay behind in case I have to tow him. He cranks motor with much difficulty and right away we notice a knocking noise that we had not heard before. He takes boat for a ride and it quits again. I tow him in and decide to check compression because of noise. turns out he has 120 120 30 compression. I tell him he has major problems. He buys another engine and gives me old engine. I split the crankcase because this engine doesnt have head bolts. Number one cylinder shot number 2 showing signs of wear. Main bearings on crankshaft all have cracks. Looks like lubrication failure. Check oil pump looks ok, Then i notice that gasket on fuel pump only has half the gasket on and there is a large enough gap i can stick a screwdriver under. Fuel pumps work off vacuum. Could this have created the catastrophic failure of engine lean mixture.

Possibly. I his his fuel tank isn't loaded with ethanol produce "White Gook" or his new engine will crap out as well.
