"My grandfather has Johnson 150, it has been going thru oil like crazy. This happened all of sudden. We are using about 1 gallon of oil per 4 hours of run time, approx. 20 gallons of gas. varying speeds, mainly 3/4 to WOT. VRO pump going bad? oil pump going bad?"

"i understand the VRO system, but why all of the sudden would it start using so much oil. Nothing on this boat has changed. He has owned this boat since 1995, and replaced the motor 12-2003. It has never used this much oil."

"from what ive read a lot of people take them off and throw them, then run mixed gas at 50:1.

too much oil isnt necessarily better but if that oil system ever stops BOOM.

ive read mixed feelings about to keep or not to keep. ive never had one so i have no opinion just putting the info out there, ive read those little pumps are expensive."

"Normally an engine that starts to use too much oil has either a fuel/air leak in the suction side of the pump/fuel membrane or overpressure in the oil-tank.
I would rather find out what is happening than just mix 2% and continue. If The fuel pump membrane/valves is not holding pressure, You run the risk of running lean and burn down the engine."
