Im looking into buying a new 2

Im looking into buying a new 2004 crusader classic. This engine was bought buy the owner and never put into his boat. Is there any concerns for an engine that has never been run and that has neen sitting for 5 years? What would be a reasonable price for this engine? I believe a new one is 7k less the harness and the cast pan. Any comments would be appreciated.

"where was it 'stored'?
have you seen it, personally?
was it run since it was delivered?"

It was store in his garage. I have seen it and it looks good. He is willing to run it for me. I'm just a little concerned about any damage that could have occurred from sitting so long. $4900 is intriging but no warranty

"IF--repeat--IF it was stored

"IF--repeat--IF it was stored properly, no problem. (That means the cylinders thoroughly oiled inside.) If not, there will be rust marks in the walls where the rings sat for so long; and it will burn oil like crazy.

I'd insist on both hearing it run AND a compression test.

The owner did not put oil in cylinders but said they come lubed up from factory. Will the compression test tell me anything about thr rustmarks on the walls and oil consumption

"If they oiled it, but the rings are stuck in their grooves, it will have lousy compression. A comp test will tell you. If it's low, don't buy it!

"pop the plugs out and look in

"pop the plugs out and look into the cylinders with a bright flashlight....hopefully, before it is run.

As noted above, if the cylinder walls have a red tint, be skeptical. You can also check the spark plugs for corrosion indications. If ok, do the compression test. I the readings are balanced and toward the high end, you should be ok.

BTW, the Prep for shipping process is similar to the winterization process. It's effective time is less than a year, depending upon who did it and the fluids used. If the garage was heated, the odds are in your favor."
