This problem comes and goes, and I have been dealing with itfor a few years.. I included a videoclip below, which I hope is OK to post.
When you turn the ignition switch, you get one partial turnof the starter and then it “hangs up”. (at one point in the video, I held the key incrank for awhile and it managed two turns). The voltage displayed on the cockpit gaugedrops from normal (13 or so) way down to 7 or something as long as you hold theswitch in the “crank” position.
I’ve tried several different batteries (and sometimes a 50amp booster). On some occasions that usedto solve it. At other times, it will startcompletely normally but this is becoming increasingly rare. (Initially, having a completely fully chargedbattery would solve this almost all the time.)
In the thoughts I may have an intermittently bad spot in thestarter, I replaced that and it still does the same thing.
I’m beginning to wonder if there might be something in themotor that’s making it very hard/impossible for the starter to turn it over.
The boat reapir places here are all very backed up and I havethought about trying to replace some more parts just to see if that makes adifference—maybe the starter solenoid, or ignition switch??
When it DOES start, it seems to run fine.
BTW--I did already have the voltage regulator fix (baddesign by Mercury led to overheating of the voltage regulator) done on thismotor, the problem has been around since before then.
