2004 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke

I'm having two issues with my 40......1. It takes forever to cold crank. Choke works but takes forever to fire. Once it does it stays running but blows a lot of smoke. 2. It runs great for about 5 minutes then the warning horn sounds and the motor loses power and blows more smoke. It does this for about 2-3 minutes then the horn stops and the motor runs fine again. This continues every5-10 minutes. Any ideas what these two issues could be?

Oh.....I thought the choke engaged when you pressed the key in and turned the ignition.....i am the one confused...lol

That model uses an automatic fuel enrichment system to add extra gasoline during a cold start. Is it set for the automatic position? See illustration below.

Are you cranking the motor with the throttle in the idle position? That is normal but you might want to try advancing it just a tad to see if that helps.

Possibly the carburetors need to be cleaned.
