2003 PCM Excalibur hard to start when warm.

I was having engine misses when cold and would sometimes improve after warming up. I replaced the distributor cap and wires. The compression tested good, drained the FCC, no water. The spark plugs looked good with good color. I had noticed prior to this that the engine was slow increasing after 3800 rpms. I had the injectors cleaned and still having issues. The latest issue is when I stop the engine warm and try to restart 5 minutes later, it does not want to start (backfires) unless I open the throttle. The engine runs unsteady swinging a few hundred rpm at 2500.

Have you scanned the ECU for any trouble codes?

Have you checked the fuel pressure, and at WOT (under load) as well?

Your 'hot restart' issue is not unusual and could likely be mitigated (to some extent) by changing the way you operate the boat...

I am looking at scanner software thru OBD diagnostics. I am going to check fuel rail pressure today or tomorrow. The starting issue is happening on a warm engine. It has always ran and started well. I am assuming the fuel rail pressure needs to be checked under load, so it would have to be on the water.

yes, fuel pressure should be checked across the RPM band, ideally. Min points would be idle, cruise and WOT...all under load...
