I have a 2003 Optimax 225hp. At the end of a long day whle running through a long slow area the motor started making a pulsating squealing noise that changed with engine RPM. I took the cowling off and traced the noise to the air compressor. The motor still seems to run fine and the noise is only heard at low RPM's. To me it sounds like a bad bearing or something is not getting lubrication. The questions are:
Has anybody had this problem?
Can the air compressor be repaired or does the whole unit need to be replaced.
How can I check to see if the unit is getting proper lubrication and which hoses are the oil hoses.

These do go bad. High heat usually does it. Salt clogges up the water jacket inside. Early 3.0L's do this a lot. The cooling hose routing was updated to help that out.

Well I took the end cap assembly off the air compressor and found that the bearings on the connecting rod that attached to the end cap had disingrated. The end rod was also discolored like it have overheated. There was also very little oil residue in the air compressor. I think there is an oil problem somewhere. I have not gotten any alarms. The engine was using oil from the tank. Any suggestion where to look for an oil problem. I was thinking clogged oil filter. The parts drawing shows an oil filter on both the supply and return lines but my engine only seem to have a filter on the return line. So thats not it. At least I know bearing parts werent sucked back into the oil system.

Turn on the pump prime. The oil should flow. THe new pump needs to be primed anyway. There is another hidden filter in the water line to check as well.
