I have a friend who has just purchased a new 4stroke Mercury and I have an opportunity to purchase his used motor which is the one in the title block. the motor is not running but the diagnosis is that it has low compression and just needs rings. visual inspection by eye through the spark plug holes indicate there is no scarring of the cylinder walls (Per my friend, I have not seen this motor since last year). So now I have a million questions, or at least a few..
- If it just needs rings, plan is to replace them myselfwith the aid of a service manual. What would I need other than new rings and agasket set?
- If I open it up and find scratches on the cylinder walls, can these motors be bored over and are rings available for that, say .030 over? What would that cost be?
- What is this motor worth in good running condition? I amguessing about $1,500 us dollars. It does have a stainless prop.
- Based on 3 above, my thoughts were to offer him $900dollars for it as is knowing I am taking a chance. Would that be a decentoffer? He is a friend and I do not want to insult him.
Thanks,
Hagar
