I have a 2003 Mercury 115 HP 4-Stroke that came with my pontoon. This is the first year that i have had it. The boat starts right up and idles and goes up to about 5 mph just fine. When I try to accelerate past that the boat does not want to get up and go. There is a big lag in acceleration and the power to the prop wavers. When i tilt the engine out of the water and accelerate I hear a chatter or wobble. I had a mechanic come out the other day to look at it and he was saying that i need to get the gear assembly replaced. Does this sound correct or could it be as simple as needing more gear case lubricant? I don't really know my way around engines but i want to make sure i'm not getting taken advantage of because its going to be a bit pricey to replace the gear assembly. Thanks for your comments.
