2003 Johnson running lousy

"was running lousy at low rpm, like it was missing every other stroke. Sometimes one cylinder would quit completely for several seconds, fire a few times and then come back on line. (Don’t know which cylinder.) My mechanic changed the carbs out with 1990’s and also replaced the fuel pump, which he said was leaking. As a result my fuel economy went up and the motor smoothed out very nicely…for about ten hours. Then it started doing the same thing and got worse as time went on. End result, I’m back where I started.
I have changed the plugs, no help. I’ve added octaine booster in hopes of overcoming the ethanol possibility, no change.
One more new indication. If I go to full throttle my tach dies. As I throttle back it comes back on line. That is getting worse also as it is now showing false readings.
My question: Do I have a fuel problem or an electrical problem or both? How do I separate the two to determine?"

Compression test #1------then

Compression test #1------then try and run it on a test tank. Do you have a fuel/water seperator. Carbs also may need to be properly re-built.

"Both cylinders test at 150 ps

"Both cylinders test at 150 psi compression. Carbs were rebuilt when installed. Fuel/water seperator emptied out, no water. Fuel tank run until empty, dumped out remaining (no water) and refilled with fresh plus octain booster. Spark plugs are tan-to-dark tan in color and wet with what looks like fuel. I think that covers it all so far. I'm at a loss."

One more thing. My mechanic says the low speed jets are #78's and that's the only ones available for those carbs. Is this true?

"Mr. Reeves or another senior

"Mr. Reeves or another senior guy would have to answer that. How old are the fuel lines. You may want to have another look at those Carbs.

How old is the ignition system? Coils, Power Pack, Sensor Coil and Stator?"

"Fuel lines have been replaced

"Fuel lines have been replaced, (afraid of ethonal problems). Squeeze bulb has been replaced. No idea on the ignition system, but if they were breaking down why would it run well for ten hours after the carbs and fuel pump were replaced? Ain't sayin' that isn't it, just seems weird.
Heard today that the tach problem indicates a bad voltage regulator. Yes? No? If yes, could that be it? (Surrounded by shade-tree mechanics here.)
