2003 evinrude 250hp wont start

Hello everyone, my evinrude 250 ficht shut of while on the way and wont start, the flywheel didnt turn, I try turning by hand it was lock. I was able to make it back to the marina on second motor. I have since use a ratchet ans socket to free up the motor by turning the flywheel, it will start and run but as soon as its in gear it locks up.

Isolate the binding problem by removing the lower unit. Try turning by hand then. If still locked up, the problem is in powerhead. Check lower unit by trying to turn the driveshaft.
One of those two will be binding up.

If it is the lower, my recommendation will be to get a good used replacement. Do not try to fix a lower unit that has locked up to the point that it will not turn.
You can do it, but it will not be cost effective.
 
You can start it for a short period with the lower unit off just dont let it get hot. Pull the water pump then you will have a better idea whats going on inside the gearbox. If there is alot of metal shavings in the oil the gearbox needs disassembled and repaired or replaced.
