2003 BF30A Tilt-Trim wiring

I bought a used 2003 BF30A to put on my small houseboat, and am in the process of rigging the motor. The motor came with controls, including the tilt relay box for the tilt/trim unit. I've got everything figured out wiring wise from the tilt relay box on the engine end, but the helm end has 6 separate connections, none of which would plug into the wire connectors leading out of the side mount control unit (shift and throttle unit). I've spent hours searching for a wiring diagram for the tilt relay box, but can't find a thing. I assume that the 6 connections must plug into various gauges at the helm that I don't have, nor probably don't want. The boat is a full displacement hull, with a top end hull speed of around 6 to 7 mph, so planing is not desired, nor could I achieve planing with so small an engine on a 3000 lb boat. Consequently, I probably do not need the motor trim feature to work, but I do want the electric tilt to work. Any suggestions on what to do with the helm end of the tilt trim relay box wiring? Do I need to plug those 6 connectors into anything to make the tilt mechanism work using the tilt switch on the remote control lever?

Thanks awfully,

Is this relay box separate from the engine?

It sounds like you may have an add on trim unit. That is...the unit mounts to the boat and the motor then mounts to the unit.

Also....What are the colors of the wires?

Can you take a picture of the connections to which you are referring?

Thanks for replying Mike.

The relay box is a stock Honda part for the BF 25/30A engines, part nr 34300-ZV7-000AH. There are 4 groups of wires out of the box: 2 groups plug into connections at the engine that appear to go directly to the trim-tilt motor, 1 group are the + and - wires that connect directly to the battery, and 4th group are long leads (16 ft) that I assume went to the helm area and have six different plug ends.

There isn't anything at the shift/throttle remote control unit to plug any of the 6 leads into. The three wire connectors shown dangling are for instruments (rpm, hours, temp), and the big wiring harness from the shift/throttle remote control unit plugs directly into a connector at the engine.

Here's a shot of the engine end of the tilt-trim relay control box wires plugged into the connectors the lead to the tilt-motor:

I found a brief reference in a Honda set up manual for this type motor which said to connect the 6 plugs of the mystery third wiring group from tilt relay box, into the three plugs of the main wiring loom from the helm remote control (shift-throttle). Yup, sure enough, that works. I just couldn't see how it would when I first inspected the unconnected parts. Motor tilted up on command as desired. So if anyone runs into this problem in the future, and can find this thread, here's the answer.

Sorry I took so long to reply. Glad you got it worked out.

It had me puzzled for a while, until I remembered that the 2003 25/30 did not have trim and tilt. Honda had an external unit that mounted on the boat, then the motor mounted on it. It is basically the same as the add on unit that Panther makes.

Thank you for your help Mike. I know so little about trim, I can't tell you if I have it installed or not. The motor tilts to an infinite number of positions from full down to full up, but I doubt that's what trim means. In any event, I'm quite happy with what I've got.
