This motor has 477 hours on it

This motor has 477 hours on it. I am second owner of this deck boat. My fear is that it will need a new engine. It ran great yesterday. Parked it at the dock. It wouldnt start. Pulled it onto the trailer via some ski rope. Started it this morning and it barely ran with a very loud knocking. I ran it for 5 seconds or so 3 times. Any Ideas ? Could it possibly just be a valve spring?

"I thought these motors had a life more like in the 1200 to 2000 hour range. I know that all depends on matainance. What would I do to check for the obvious problems? Compression test each cylinder, what would be an exceptable # ? I'm hopeing "Just in Time" was right with his sticky valve guess.

"Not only depends on maintenance, but on use...
1200 to 2000 hrs if normally run at no more than 75 to 80% MAX WOT RPMs...assuming of course you have the correct prop. Engine life drops SHARPLY if run above 80% WOT..."
