I have a 2003 496 mag that no problems till last season when water pump went out. Replaced water pump ran boat no problem on 2 trips. 3rd trip boat heated up over 180 degrees. Changed thermostat cause boat had plenty of water running through exhaust.

Now boat runs about 170 and creeps up to 180 at wot. Yesterday at wot for 10 min temp right at 180 alarm sounded no guardian backed off to 3500 rpm and temp quickly dropped to around 170. But alarm still sounded for 1 min then nothing.

Boat ran good rest of trip but temp his 180 I read Avg temp is suppose to be 160 and before replacing thermostat it ran there. Do you think mechanic put wrong thermostat in? I am planning on bringing in to get code read to ensure it was a heat alarm.

I just don't remember it running up at 180 temp.

Re: 496 mag overheating

I checked for debris without removing anything off the lower unit and do not see anything it is very clean. Do i need to remove the drive to look further?

Re: 496 mag overheating

i would think that if somthing were actually wrong it would get hotter then 180

sounds like you have 180 thermostat

but thats just my opinion
