"Having issues with 175 Johnso
"Having issues with 175 Johnson 60 degree cutting out after being warm. Engine starts and runs fine cold. Run it for awhile (or all day withhout shutting off) and it gets nice & hot. Shut it down for a few minutes, start up and it's fine. Shut it down and let it sit for 30 minutes, starts fine, put in gear and give it gas and it dies. Normally won't die if put in gear and allowed to idle. Engine ran flawlessly for first 4 years and then one day this just started happening. I saw on another post the timing wheel neeeds to be adjusted. I will try this but why would the timing wheel not affect operation for 4 years and then one day become the issue? Unless it moved??
When I have the problem I fix it by revving the engine in neutral in the 1,000-1,200 range and it is very rough in this range but then it starts to clear itself. Once I get the engine to clear the issue it runs great in all aspects until I shut it down again. I read on another post these 60 degree engines have had this issue in the past. Has anyone figured out the issue?
Is it possible that I have a weak fuel (VRO) pump that has been getting weaker over time? I never used to have to choke the engine to start but then after 3-4 years of use when cold I now have to choke to start. When the engine is warm is the engine not self choking and relying solely on the VRO pump for fuel and mine is weak?Seems to smoke a touch more and uses a little more oil/gas than used to. I use the engine alot and have put over 5,000 gallons of gas through the fuel pump. What is typical life on them? Time for a new one for general maintenance anyways?"
