"Having issues with 175 Johnso

"Having issues with 175 Johnson 60 degree cutting out after being warm. Engine starts and runs fine cold. Run it for awhile (or all day withhout shutting off) and it gets nice & hot. Shut it down for a few minutes, start up and it's fine. Shut it down and let it sit for 30 minutes, starts fine, put in gear and give it gas and it dies. Normally won't die if put in gear and allowed to idle. Engine ran flawlessly for first 4 years and then one day this just started happening. I saw on another post the timing wheel neeeds to be adjusted. I will try this but why would the timing wheel not affect operation for 4 years and then one day become the issue? Unless it moved??

When I have the problem I fix it by revving the engine in neutral in the 1,000-1,200 range and it is very rough in this range but then it starts to clear itself. Once I get the engine to clear the issue it runs great in all aspects until I shut it down again. I read on another post these 60 degree engines have had this issue in the past. Has anyone figured out the issue?

Is it possible that I have a weak fuel (VRO) pump that has been getting weaker over time? I never used to have to choke the engine to start but then after 3-4 years of use when cold I now have to choke to start. When the engine is warm is the engine not self choking and relying solely on the VRO pump for fuel and mine is weak?Seems to smoke a touch more and uses a little more oil/gas than used to. I use the engine alot and have put over 5,000 gallons of gas through the fuel pump. What is typical life on them? Time for a new one for general maintenance anyways?"

"You don't have a VRO prob

"You don't have a VRO problem. Most likely needs a sync & linkage adjustment along with timing check, general tune up and de-carb. Check the compression while you're at it. If that doesn't do it, you could have a clogged jet in one or more of the carbs. If the recirculation valves have failed, it might act similar to this, but usually not to the extent you are describing. Probably a combination of things. Start testing things before you throw parts at it."

"Thanks. Appreciate the help.

"Thanks. Appreciate the help.

I should have mentioned I cleaned and rebuilt all the carbs this spring. This didn't do anything other than now I have clean carbs.

I used to have no problems when it was cold in the morning but now I'm noticing a little hesitation in reverse in the morning. Put it in gear, it might hesitate a little and then it completley clears istelf. Not bad but I notice it's there. Fine for the day. Shut it off warm then have the issues.

The other day after shutting it off warm, let it sit for 30 min and fired it off. It started dying in neutral. Pumped the primer ball when in neutral and this seemed to help and increased rpms at the same time. Not always when pumping the ball but most of the time. Still had to rev in neutral a couple of times to clear it. So the next day went out and used the boat. Each time I stopped and fished for 15 minutes I would prime the ball before firing it off. This worked all day. Couple of times to test didn't prime the ball started having minor hesitatons. Came in and let sit for an 45 min. Primed the ball. Tough starting and wanted to die. Died a bunch of times in neutral. Got it running and wanted to die until cleared itself and then fine. Then let it sit for 1 hr, fired it off and died a couple of times. Then tried firing off a bunch of times and wouldn't fire off until I choked it hard. Fired off, bunch of hesitations in low until it cleared itslef.

Thanks for reading all this! Still think it is the sync & linkage & general tune up?

Someone else mentioned the recircualtion valves to me. I looked into those but don't see how you clean them (disconnect hoses and just spray some carb cleaner or engine tuner into the disconnected hose? spray away from the carbs towards plugs?) or replace them as they seem to be compression fit into the block (no way to spin them to unscrew them to replace them).

Thanks again!!"

"there is no adj,..on the timi

"there is no adj,..on the timing wheel...and since it runs good cold,..i would say u have no timing wheel prob....i believe i would try to narrow it down,to ign,or fuel....i have seen funky VST tanks, make some wierd prob's.."

"JWB - Thanks. I noticed in t

"JWB - Thanks. I noticed in the past how there is no adj on the timing wheel yet the book talks of adjusting it. Either way I was just going through the sync & linkage and my engine had a couple things that were off.

Only thing that scares me now is the trouble I had starting it this past weekend. In the past it always started no matter what, even hot and just died when I put it in gear. I'll adjust the linkage and see what happens this weekend.

The thing that is funny is that it ran great for 4 years so maybe my linkage moved because it was way off and the manual is adamant that certain things need to be moving at exactly the same time. I guess things need to be recalibrated from time to time.

Appreciate the feedback and will let you know how I make out.

Thanks to Dcramer for making me look into the linkage.

Hopefully can figure it out soon because dangerously close to taking it to a mechanic and in many years of boating with my dad were always able to fix our own issues. Like to keep the streak alive."

"i think,what u r seeing,...is

"i think,what u r seeing,...is the TIMING POINTER..adj........the wheel...is keyed,to crank."

"ck,that all ur throttle rolll

"ck,that all ur throttle rolllers, are in place, and COMPLETE,..the one that moves the carb butterflies,..'goes away'...the ousd clear roller part, cracks and falls off...throwing ur L&S off.."

Thanks for the help. The adju

Thanks for the help. The adjustments on the roller made all the difference. Mine was way off. Working good now. Thanks again.

I have a 1992 johnson 105 jet

I have a 1992 johnson 105 jet converted to prop. it becomes a 150. vro is disconected. i mix the fuel. i have to pump the fuel bulb to keep it running. Im not sure if i have the vacume lines in the correct possitions. it runs good if you can keep it pressurized. thank you for any input
