"Just bought a used 2002 40 Hp

"Just bought a used 2002 40 Hp Mercury with oil injection. Engine has less than 15 hours, but it will not idle. Unit was in storage for approx. 1 year and I am not sure gas was run out of engine before unit was sotred. Any suggestions on a simple repair?"

"I didn't give all the correct information. The unit had been stored with gas and would not idle or throttle up. Today I drained all the old gas, cleaned fuel filter, changed plugs, spray cleaned the carb (inside of what I could get to) (did not disassemble)(looked very clean). Unit will now crank (will not idle unless you periodically press teh key to choke the unit) and will throttle up, but you still have to choke the engine just for a second or 2 to kepp it running.

I think the carb could be out of adjustment."

Better pull those carbs on a 2 stroke before you torch a piston. If there is any doubt to thier condition inside. Don't ride around like that. "

"It only has one carb and i pulled and cleaned it today. Found some build-up in the nozzles (jets). This was cleaned out and carb were reassembled. Unit now runs anywhere from 1 minute to 3 at idle and 5 - 10 minutes throttled up a little, then unit quits. Sounds like it is not getting gas. Unit starts right back-up. When it starts to die you can choke it and it will run another 2-10 minutes.

Thanks Bandit for your help. i decide to reclean the carb and fuel. So I let them soak overnight in B12 ChemTool. I reassembled everything this afternoon and it works great. Thanks again for your help.
