2002 Mercury 40hp 2 stroke will not stay running.

The Mercury 40hp 2 stroke ran great 2 months ago. I tried to crank it yesterday, and it will fire up for about 5 max 10 seconds, and shut down. Could it be I let it sit to long without running the motor? Any suggestions would be very much appreciate!
