hello there..i have a 2002 90hp Johnson with ptt...sitting at table the other day and heard noise coming from boat while key was sitting here on table ..went out and my ptt motor was running trying to lower motor...disconnected bat immediately ...have not reconnected as I don't want to burn anything out...if it did not already...any ideas on what might have caused this to happen..and where to start for diagnosing problem...any help appreciated thanks joe

One of your PTT switches (if you have more than one) is shorting out. If more than one switch, unplug the switch when this condition is taking place to determine which one.

my switch is on throttle control..up down and motor side up down,,what switches confuse me of what u mean..reply back appreciated..joe

Those are the switches I'm speaking of. One of them is shorting out due to moisture. I'm puzzled why that would confuse you.

What Joe is talking about is it could be the switch in the control handle or the one on the motor cowl. Either one could do it.

I forgot to mention relays sorry...just disconnected switch on side of motor ..hooked up power to battery and ptt went on trying to lower motor...disconnected battery 4 now.. does that eliminate that switch...? and could it be 1 0f the 2 relays..

got it....it is the trim switch on the binnacle mount that is shorted out...thanks for your time...sorry I sounded confused...joe

good luck on finding just that switch...last time i fought that they wanted 150 bucks for the assembly that included the wiring... the switch was not a sealed switch and was of a ww2 time frame design...it could be taken apart and cleaned up but be careful and dont lose the little parts...the best way to do it is to cut the wires and remove the switch and work on it on a bench with good lighting...and then solder and insulate wires in reassembly..nalso be careful when putting the switch back in..the little screw screws into plastic and is easy to break..been there and done that.....

spraying that switch wont work...if its like the ones i saw the little rocker contact is copper and coated with green corrosion..
