"My Honda 90 always starts but it is a race with battery run down. Here are the details.
1. Engine overnight cold (Surrounding temp)
2. Temp between 50 & 70 Don't even think about touching the choke. Set throttle at about the setting for 3000 RPM for a warm engine. Grind on the starter until one cylinder starts to fire and it will most likely pick up the rest of cylinders and increase RPM requiring reduction in the throttle. Once it starts it will restart almost instantly for the rest of the day.
2. Here is the clincher. Temp 30 to 50F. Set throttle as before, press in key for choke and it will start within 10 to 15 seconds and continue to run as soon as you let off of the choke.
3. When it is 50F or above I am always wondering if it will start before the battery goes dead. Only happened once.

What am I doing wrong?"

"Been there and tried that. Had to jump from my trolling motor battery to get it started. Moderate and high (well this board does not like the word ambnt temp, even spelled correctly) so lets try atmospheric temp Honda's don't like to be choked (even momentarily) no matter what the owners manual says."

"This starting problem when cold is the only problem that it has. It runs great and starts very easily for the rest of day after that first start. I thought maybe the gas might be back flowing to the tank. But, it only takes 1 squeeze of the fuel bulb before it runs into resistance. So I think that back flowing is ruled out."

"Batteries don,t ike to work well when cold. Are you sure you have a good starting battery? Can you measure the voltage at the starter when cranking the motor. What does the voltage drop to when cranking a cold motor?
Nick"

"Thanks Nick, The battery is brand new and it is cranking the engine like it does when it is warm. I haven't measured the voltage during crank but I will next spring when I use it again."
