I'm in the process of replacing a piston and a rod in my '02 Honda 25, and I'm having trouble removing the flywheel. I'm not a very experienced mechanic, so any advice will help. So far, I've removed the nut and tried using a 3-jaw gear puller, but I can't get it to budge. Does anyone have any tricks or even just some advice on using a gear puller. This is my first time using one.

"Tighen up the puller so that it is putting stress on the flywheel (trying to pull it off) and then give it a tap or two with a small hammer (right on main bolt making contact with the crank).

Normally wouldn't recommend that because it can distort the oil seals, but since you are tearing it down anyhow, it won't hurt...."

"Using a gear puller on a flyw

"Using a gear puller on a flywheel will likely ruin the flywheel.

On my Honda BF100, I used a "Harmonic Balancer Puller" but a Steering Wheel Puller would work as well.

There should be several bolt holes near the center of the flywheel and use those (two or more) to support the puller. Now you can safely put more pressure to the center of the crank and a tap on the center pressure bolt should pop it right off.

A little penetrating oil on the flywheel 'key' will help."

"Thanks for the info guys. I finally got it the oher day. I did it using the 3 jaw gear puller and following exactly what you said Graham. This time though, I took a 25" breaker bar to the gear puller and really put the torque to it hard. It didn't take much for it to pop off then. I guess I just wasn't torqueing it hard enough before. The flywheel came off fine, and the teeth don't seem to be marred or anything. So, onward with the disassembly. I'm sure I'll need more help once I get my parts in and start reassembly though. Thanks alot"
