2002 F225 Sputtering above 4300rpm

Got a 2002 Yamaha F225 that starts sputtering intermittentlyat 4300 rpm and above (have 660 hrs on it). No water in thefuel filters/separators. We run the boat every weekend (last 3 month - both Sat & Sun) and frequently during the week; thus there is plenty of fresh fuel (90 octane Ethanol free) and no water in the fuel seperator. Some days the engine runs fine others just up to 4300 rpm. Had a Yamaha mechanic look at it and $600 later still have the problem. Any ideas? Thanks -jc

"... Some days the engine runs fine others just up to 4300 rpm." Those are the hardest to diagnose. You'll probably have to run it with a Yamaha Diagnostic System plugged in on a laptop to get a good read on it. They looked at the fuel pump I assume (low and high pressure pumps...). Does it run rough when it does this? Or smooth but just won't get above 4300? If it's rough it's probably dropping a cylinder, if it's smooth it's probably a lack of fuel. What fuel filters did they change? Have you tried removing the gas cap when this happens? Just wondering if it's a feed problem from the tank or not (clogged vent tube, etc...).

Mike, thank you for the feed back these are great suggestions and I will look into them if what we found didnot work. Got a call from my mechanic this morning. He said that in the courseof checking the fuel pump he noticed that the pump intermittently works when hemoves the wire harness around. Apparently, a connector had an issue. Let’s seewhat happens this weekend.
Kind Regards -JC

At 600hrs on that engine you should get the mechanic to check for the dreaded F225 corroded exhaust system and the more generic F series leaky oil seal problem in the bottom of the oil pump. Both tend to appear soemwhere around the 600 - 800hr point and since the powerhead has to come off you can do both repairs at the same time and save some money.

Aliboy, Yeah, I have been avoiding that issue by living indenial! J Igot about 660 hours on it and I’m planning on getting twin 150’s in May-June2013. With any luck my denial attitude will get me there.
Thanks for the feed back -jc

Good luck. .We only managed 600hrs (in 2008) on our 2005 F200 before we had to do the oil seal. Found the rotted exhaust when we pulled the power head to do the oil seal. Yamaha won't even discuss helping out with fixing their shabby design/build. We own more Hondas and less Yamahas now.

Honda makes a great product but in my area there are veryfew shops that work on them. When I go to twins I’ll peek at Suzuki. Thanks forthe feed back.

Suzuki and Honda can't handle salt water, there bolts are cheaper compared to Yamaha

I work on them all and what I have seen over the years is that

Thanks everybody for the feed-back!! Went out this weekend and it ran fine. So itappears that the wiring harness was the culprit. However, as soon as I droveout of the marina I noticed that my hydraulic steering had a lot of play now.???

Top off the steering fluid at helm

It should get better if not you will need to bleed it

Check for leaks at the rams, if seastar system then end caps leak all the time

I have twin 225 that will sputter on power up after cruising at low speed. I simply turn the motor off and trim it all the way up and it seems to clear the problem. sometimes I have to do it several times....what is the remedy for this...motor run out to 6,000 rpm when fine but can't clear 44 without shaking until I tilt motor. What is a potential fix....
