2002 90hp johnson

have a 2002 j90plsn that i bought new..been a good motor...just starting to have problems when starting cold..always pushed key in to activate primer solenoid ..was still little hard starting...warmed up fine ..click key and go..seems ive been having to play with red solenoid lever to get to stay running...any troubleshooying i can do to see if solenoid is working properly or suggestions what other problem might be occuring...any replys helpful..thanks joe
 
The electric primer must have fuel pressure supplied to it in order to work.It get that pressure from the manual fuel pump ( primer bulb ) and from the motor fuel pump when it is cranking.---------------Remove two small hoses at the motor end , then push in the key and see what happens.---Then crank the motor and see what happens.
 
thanks for quick reply...boat still covered ..motor fogged...just getting heads up for problem free boating for this summer...will be in touch ..thanks again
 
If it were my boat I would have looked it alll over in the fall.--------------Just in case there are major problems.------------------Compression test is a " must do " whenever a motor acts up.
 
Just my .02. What kind of oil(s) are you using? Mixing oils can create problems. Gas over a month or two old can be another source of bad stuff happening. About any switched circuit can be easily tested with test light or ohm meter. I've cured oodles of problem by simply cleaning fuel lines and repairing fuel line connectors.
 
used johnson oil for first 2 years..now only use west marine ..buy it by the case..change waterfuel seperator twice a year...add 2+4 when fueling..have a 27gal built in tank so i add e zorb about every other fuel up...have changed few connections...did notice a little fuel coming out of of somecomponet when pumping ball primer..will have to take closer look when uncovered...thanks..let you know...never messed with any electrical connections..

pretty sure narrowing dowm problem...deteriated aluminum gas tank...for water in fuel b4 tried starting...through primer ball into glass container foung gas to be contaminated...took centr console off found pitting holes on surface of 27 gal built in tank,,,,some all the way threw...having new tank built as we speak...my question now is to find out what king of strapping to put on floor of where tank sits in and where there the stainless straps that hold it in place with..looked like some kind of closed cell foam but so old cant really tell..its a 1981 aquasport center console osprey..any input would be helpful....thanks joe
