i have looked up and down this site and others for info pertaining to my problem but have yet to discover anything that works for me. i have a 2002 90hp johnson and im tryin to drop the lower unit. i cant seem to disengage the shift rod. i have read about this mystery bolt under the carbs..i havent found one. i also read a thread that stated to remove a quick pin and push the shift linkage to the port side then backwards and vola`, shift rod should disengage..., so i did this but it still connected. i wiggled and i jiggled but nothing came loose. can someone please explain what the problem might be?

Pull the hitch pin ----push to the port side and it will come loose.--------------You have ALL the bolts out and will it come down say 1/2"

well im currently alone, but i left one bolt in ...pushed the bellcrank in...then removed the final bolt and when the lower unit dropped the shift rod was still connected..not allowing the lower unit to drop

Push it in and then you have to move forward or backward a bit so it does not " re-engage "---------------Once off do not turn the shift rod !!

hey i tried again...nothing...i attached some pix

before i did anything--
then i pushed it in--
and this what it looks like after i tried to drop the lower unit--
and a motor shot--

the pin is out and in my hand...i was able to push the bellcrank in without an issue but nothing seemed to disengage..is there threads on top of shift rod part #60 or something?

No threads on top of # 60---------------------# 70 should push out to port side --------------------------But maybe on those you have to take out #27

so do u think im doing this right? pushing shift shaft assy(#46) from the starboard side to port? or should i somehow try to pull from the port side? i dont know...is #27 the infamous "bolt" that everyone talks about?

Well, ----- some of the parts on the 2002 models are the same as earlier models.-----------------------The bell crank is pushed to the port side to disconnect the shift rod.

im still having some problems trying to remove this lower unit. this fourm says to simply push in the shift shaft assblemy and the shift rod should disengage, allowing the unit to fall. somthing seems to be holding it in place and not allowing the shift rod to disengage..and i have two theories...1-the shift shaft assembly is bottoming out on the bottom of the lower carb (pictures 1-2) or there is a bolt holding it in place (pictured 3) any advice would be soo much appreciated please please thanx

ok..if anyone is reading this...yes that bolt in the pictures has to be loosened in order for the shift rod to release from the motor. but im having a serioulsy hard time now tryin to replace the lower unit. i cant seem to get the shift rod lined up right. i tried the old hanger trick but it did not work out. the gearcase is currently in netural. any advice would be great.-thanx
