I am new to Mercury, I can not locate an ID plate.

How can I tell if my engine is a salt water version?

How can I verify the year and HP (there are no HP numbers on the bonnet?

By the way, happy to be a Merc owner. (I have always owned an Evinrude)
 
If the ID label (it will be a sticker, not a plate) is missing from the transom bracket, you should be able to get the serial number from the ID disc on the engine block. The ID disc looks like a big aluminum welsh plug, and is embedded in the side of the engine block.
 
I looked for the soft plug and could not see one in plain sight. Could it be under the air intake?

There is an adjustable mounting bracket with a sticker and a # starting with 00. Could that be it?
