2002 15HP Mercury 2 stroke - Stalling

I have a 2002 15HP Mercury 2 stroke and it was idle for a while and I did not have any fuel stabilizer in the gas. My line in my gas tank was blocked so I changed the line & the bulb. I cleaned the fuel filter which had a lot of sediment built up in the bottom of the filter. I changed the spark plugs. The engine starts no problem but it will cut it out when I try to rev it up. I have to leave the choke out. On a few occassions I was able to rev it up when it was in netural. I took off the engine cover and I put my hand over the air intake and the engine ran good but once I removed my hand it started stalling again.

Any suggestions?

Ok - had crud in the fuel line and the fuel filter - so safe to assume you have crud in the carb.

Since it's been sitting there is no "magic in a can" that can fix it at this point.

The carb needs to come off, get disassembled and thoroughly cleaned out.

Since choking it (giving it higher gas/air mix ratio) helps that's a good indicator that you low speed jet is clogged up.

Likewise, you hand blocking the "air supply" meant more fuel and less air in the mix - a sure sign that gas is not getting through the carb like it should.

About the only thing that goes wrong with these motors is lack of proper storage or running old gas - a good carb cleaning is the solution for both cases...

Thanks for the info. Yes, I left it idle too long. I am semi technical. Is this something I can do my self? Will I need to put in new gaskets? You don't happen to have the instructions removing and re-installing the car

Yes, although it may initially look scarey a carb job is actually quite simple.

But do spend the 35 bucks for a Seloc's manual covering your model. Seloc's will walk you through the whole thing, but the best part is the do/don't section (which is not included in the factory manuals).

If you get a "carb kit" it will have everything you need.

Merc currently has 2 versions on the market.

For about 50 bucks they have (1395-97611) a gasket and diaphram kit which includes gaskets/seals for the carb, everything you need to rebuild the fuel pump (integral to the carb) and parts to redo the primer.

At the 80 dollar mark (1395-8237072) you get everything above plus all the needle valves, springs etc.

Of course, all the parts are available individually - any Merc dealer could help sort out exactly what you want.

In comparison, most shops will charge 200 bucks for a carb rebuild - so even with the cost of a manual, you can do the whole she-bang for about 1/2 price and you need no specialized tools (a couple screwdrivers and a wrench)....
